Math: Quick Blog

I tend to target literacy and equity, but this reflection will be on math, specifically using:

NKT – Number Knowledge Test

DNC – Developing Number Concepts

AMC – Assessing Math Concepts

Let’s dive in with Kindergarten – 2nd grade….

I was a participant in a webinar a few months ago and here is the information that was shared at that time, knowing that information is always changing & modifying.

-Dive into the data and reflect on what it is saying. What do we need to do next? How will we do that?

-Critical Learning Phases by Kathy Richardson….six assessments: counting objects, changing numbers, number arrangements, hiding assessments, ten frames, and grouping tens

-Intervention support should occur for 10-15 minutes 3-4 times per week at a different time outside of the 60 minute math block. Consistency is vital!

-AMC is used to identify the baseline and move up and down as needed to support student growth; use the class instruction report to group students; work on similar activities with varying numbers; change activities versus the same activity over and over again (Obvious, right?);

-So what happens during PLTs? Focus on the data and be intentional with next steps. Ensure there is alignment between assessments and standards. Full implementation of NKT, DNC, & AMC should be happening now (2019-2020) due to grades K-2 receiving training during the previous four years (K 15-16, 1st 16-17, and 2nd 17-18).

Let’s dive in with grades 3-5….

-3rd grade can use AMC

-4th and 5th grades should use paper/pencil NKT data and then use K-2 math interventions based on being significantly below grade level expectations.

-4th and 5th grades should access unit guides “misconceptions and interventions” to support kids

My immediate reflection is….WOW! We have so much specific information and training that has occured with educators in grades K-2. What and how do we provide high levels of support with educators in grades 3-5?

Interventions need to be documented, progress monitored, and instruction differentiated to ensure kids are on target toward their goal. Oh, and we need to tell kids what their goals are and have them be part of the goal setting and steps for success process.

I met with our math coach yesterday (Friday, Nov 15, 2019) and we outlined action steps we need to take to support our colleagues to align the work with standards, our intervention matrix, and to track student growth using our intervention effectiveness tracker.

I look forward to our continued intentional work to support math K-5.

Always be Meaningful & Memorable.

HIGH FIVE!
